The Travel Act prohibits illegal gambling on interstate commerce. In addition, the Wire Act is a law against illegal betting on sporting events.

The first major multi-player Internet gaming event was the Liechtenstein International Lottery. Other notable gambling-related games include lottery and pool-selling.

Several states have enacted laws to protect their citizens from Internet gambling. However, the presence of an interstate element complicates enforcement.

One of the most notable attacks has been based on the Commerce Clause. For example, state officials have expressed concern that the Internet could be used to transport illegal gambling across state lines.

In the United States, the federal government has tried to rein in the gambling business through a variety of legal avenues. Although some attempts have failed, other efforts have been successful.

For instance, the Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Ass’n v. PayPal case was a significant one. In it, the company faced criminal charges for accepting financial instruments from an Internet bet.
