The Federal Laws Relating to Online Gambling

Online Gambling

Whether you’re a consumer or a business, you have to understand how the laws regulating online gambling work. These laws include the Wire Act, the Illegal Gambling Business Act, and the Travel Act. They all prohibit the conduct of unlawful gambling in the United States. But there are also other federal criminal statutes that relate to online gambling. Regardless of the particular statute, there are certain general requirements for owning and running an illegal gambling business.

The Illegal Gambling Business Act makes it illegal for a gambling business owner to accept payment for online gambling. A business that is operated by five or more persons, or a business that involves the use of a gambling device, may be considered an illegal gambling business. An illegal gambling business must be in operation for at least two days and have gross revenues of at least $2,000 in a single day. It also must be located in a single state.

The Travel Act prohibits the promotion of unlawful gambling, facilitating unlawful gambling, and promoting money laundering. It also prohibits the payment of gambling debts and shipments of gambling items in interstate or foreign commerce.

The Wire Act, on the other hand, prohibits gambling on sporting events and contests. It also prohibits the use of gambling devices. These statutes are closely related to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. The latter is an attempt to prevent the use of financial instruments by illegal Internet bettors.
